Today Nathan and its sister company are based at Frostholme Mill on the
Yorkshire/Lancashire border. Frostholme Mill in the village of Cornholme was a cotton mill
and where the industrial revolution took hold and catapulted the world into the industrial era.
In the second half of the 1800s 90% of all the cotton spun was produced within a few short
miles from here, the steep valleys and plentiful water supply was the perfect combination to
provide the right atmosphere to produce cotton yarn and cloth.
The mill was built in 1861 and had a steam powered weaving shed with 400 looms and by 1887 this had risen to
over 1,000 looms employing more than 600 people. Cotton continued to be woven at Frostholme Mill until 1968
when it was one of the last mills to stop weaving in the area. Shortly afterward it became a furniture factory.
Today we have one of the largest furniture manufacturing units supplying the retail trade in the UK of upper
middle market furniture. The mill continues to produce high quality furniture for the Nathan and Sutcliffe
Brands.
